I didn't write about the Pinewood Derby in January yet. I know it's March (super soon anyway) and so I thought I should get this down before my old memory fails me. It was two cars to be made this year--and this was happening when Cameron had a science project due the day after the race. So while he was off track in December-we did the usual Christmas stuff and relaxed and so on--and worked a little on the project and the car. After Christmas and the first week in January, it became a lot more stressful to do both at the same time. The science project was finished two days before it was due and the car one day before the race. Shawn went all out this year and bought the tools to be able to grind wheels and other stuff. I'm not sure exactly what else the tools do but they were easy enough to use that Cameron and Kimball got to do lots of work on the wheels and cars. They cut out, sanded, painted. (We figured that with four boys we would be using these tools a lot and get our money's worth out of them.) Shawn put on the wheels and "graphited" them so much he stained some of my garbage can lid. The night of the race started out with every boy weighing in the car. Because of my greatly calibrated scale at home-we were right on 5 oz.
The race began and Cameron and Kimball's cars were really really really fast. Thye beat almost everyone. Cameron ended up coming in 2nd place overall by .01th of a second; Kimball came in 5th place. We were hoping that Kimball's car would win overall this year--but he did come in first in his den. That gives us hope for next year. Trent and Sam can't wait to do races-and Kimball has high hopes and great plans for next year. All in all, it was a fun night.
