I have been reading about how grateful and thankful people are these days...in the month of November. And then the month of December comes and people are all about love, service, giving and being happy. Wow. Wish we could do that all year round...cause January comes and it's all about ME ME ME and how I have to get those pounds off because you made all those sugar full desserts that you forced down my throat and now look at these hips and thighs! Yah. Well, I am grateful for a couple months at least where people around me are focused on others. See it's good for ME ME ME--ha ha just kidding.
We had a fun Thanksgiving with my sister and her family. It was pretty low-key, the kids didn't really want turkey, and weren't super hungry...although I think if we were serving hot dogs and mac and cheese then they might have been starving. We got to extend our table to the full length--we recently bought a new one for the very reason of having people be able to sit down and eat at our table. (As opposed to standing or eating in the family room). The boys did gingerbread houses afterwards...which since I was lacking in motivation, I only made three houses and then we shared. It was fun talking to my sister, and just hanging out, relaxed at home.
Black Friday came a little early for us this year. Shawn camped out all night inside Wal-mart with his sister, getting ready for some great deals. Seriously, I didn't think that there are ANY deals that would convince ME to stay up all night..because I'm paying for the privilege of not sleeping? Nope, that doesn't work for me and my bed. Apparently, it was worth it to save a few bucks for Shawn, but he was grumpy and tired (duh) for the next two days. Then we decided to get out Christmas decorations out.
We headed over to the store tonight and let Trenton pick out the tree this year. It took him all of 5 minutes to pick out 3 different trees he liked. I like that...quick in and out. NO time for kids to run around chasing each other, screaming up and down the aisles, or getting snowballs and throwing them, or falling down and helping us to find out where the first aid station in that store is. So we strapped it onto the car and home we went. That's when our meager supply of decorations came out. I need my sister in law Lori here--she is one awesome decorator. I'm not. At all. The kids wound lights and greenery around the stairs. I put the nativity up--one on the desk and one on the table for little hands to touch (b/c the one on the desk is UNtouchable). We hung the lights and then the decorations and voila! We have some Christmas here. Then because Mom is tired, the kids went off to bed.
Sam started crying because he wanted to be awake when Santa came tonight and brought all the presents and gave him a truck and cars and other toys. I tried to explain that it's not time for Santa to come, but I don't think I did a great job. Five minutes later he was crying again. Well, I can see his point. Now that we have our tree--chop chop--Santa lets go! No time to waste. Patience is a hard thing for kids to learn. Just wait until THEY have children of their own, then they will have NO choice but to learn patience. So our Christmas is up and running. Now onto shopping and activities and such...what fun.
PS. Trenton did a coloring play/puppet show yesterday about the birth and death of Jesus Christ. He drew pictures depicting each scene and held them up and talked about each part. He got pretty much everything right! It was amazing. I had to thank his Primary teacher for doing such a good job--cause he was really paying attention and learning.
